Colonoscopy referrals

Participants who receive a positive FOBT result in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) are able to be referred for an assessment colonoscopy and/or other test, in a private or public facility.

Attach a NBCSP sticker to indicate that the patient is a NBCSP participant, to assist with reporting to the Program Register. Program stickers can be ordered by calling 1800 118 868.

Public referrals

To refer your patient to a public facility:

  1. Send a clinical referral letter to the relevant Hospital and Health Service:
    • State on this referral ‘NBCSP +FOBT result’
    • Include the +FOBT result letter if available
    • Include details on symptoms, relevant medical history, and current medications.
  2. Send the NBCSP GP Assessment Report to the Program Register notifying where the patient was referred to.

For further information about public referrals, contact your GE Nurse Coordinator.

Private referrals

To refer your patient to a private facility:

  1. Send a clinical referral letter as per your normal referral process:
    • State on this referral ‘NBCSP +FOBT result’
    • Include the +FOBT result letter if available
  2. Send the NBCSP GP Assessment Report to the Program Register notifying where the patient was referred to.

Not referring

Send the NBCSP GP Assessment Report to the Program Register advising that your patient is ‘not referred’.
