Life saving transplant care
Hundreds of Queenslanders benefit from transplants each year, but many face a long wait for surgery, or have challenges getting care close to home.
We need more skilled health professionals and resources to support organ retrievals and provide high quality transplant care now and into the future. All transplants are made possible through organ donation, with DonateLife Queensland coordinating donation services across the state. We acknowledge the generosity of donors and their families.
Queensland transplant services plan
The transplant services plan describes our commitment to improving transplant care in Queensland. It aligns with the Australian Government’s future planning and priorities for organ donation, retrieval and transplantation. All state and territory governments share responsibility for achieving the goals of the National Strategy for Organ Donation, Retrieval and Transplantation.

We’re committed to better transplant care in Queensland.
More donations, retrievals and transplants
We’re improving organ donation, retrieval and transplant services through partnerships, promotion and increased donor registrations. You can register as an organ and tissue donor if you’re over 16. Find out how to register on the Services Australia website.
Fair and equal access to transplant care
Everyone who needs an organ transplant will have a fair and equal chance to get the care they need. This includes people from First Nations or culturally diverse backgrounds, and people living in rural, regional and remote areas.
More capability and capacity
Expanding our infrastructure and workforce capacity will help us respond to the growing number of retrievals and transplants in Queensland.
Better systems, data collection and reporting
Our systems, data collection, and research will support best practices. Partnerships with national transplant registries will help us predict and plan for future demand. We’ll use digital health systems to share information with a range of services and health care providers.
How we developed the plan
We worked with a range of organisations and individuals to to develop the plan.
Transplant care in Queensland
We perform kidney, liver, heart and lung transplants for patients in Queensland, and some patients from the Northern Territory and New South Wales.

Working with other services
We work closely with providers in other states and territories to coordinate:
- pancreatic transplants for adults
- heart or lung transplants for children.
