Queensland Health palliative care services review
Demand is increasing for high quality palliative care that supports the wishes of patients, families and their carers, including a patient’s wish to die at home or in a home-like setting. This increase in demand underlines the importance of planning palliative care service arrangements that meet the needs and preferences of Queenslanders into the future.
The Queensland Department of Health undertook the Queensland Health Palliative Care Services Review to develop an informed and strategic approach for future palliative care service arrangements.
The Review has now been completed and Queensland Health Palliative Care Service Review: Initial Outcomes (PDF, 2.53MB) released.
Key themes emerging from the Queensland Health Palliative Care Services Review are:
- helping more people to receive high quality palliative care services
- supporting the palliative care sector to deliver quality palliative care services
- helping to deliver better access to palliative care services to Queenslanders regardless of where they live
- providing more information about palliative care services in Queensland
- working with the Australian Government to advocate for the reform of national systems and processes to better support the delivery of palliative care services in Queensland.
In September 2018 the Queensland Government announced a wide-ranging Parliamentary Inquiry into aged care, end-of-life and palliative care in Queensland. The Health, Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee was asked to examine these issues.
A key findings report (PDF, 927KB) from the Queensland Health Palliative Care Services Review have been provided to the Parliamentary Committee to inform its deliberations. The Parliamentary Committee is due to report on the outcomes of the Parliamentary Inquiry by 30 November 2019
