Using your health information for research

Our research helps improve health care and fight disease, leading to better and longer lives.

Research in hospitals

If you’re a patient in one of our hospitals, we may ask if we can use your medical information for research.

This may include:

  • medical and personal information about your mental health, sexual health and drug use from your health record
  • health professional’s notes
  • tests results, including x-rays and blood tests
  • genetic information.

Sharing your records for research

If you give your consent, we’ll use your medical information as part of our Giving InFormation to Research (GIFTR) program.

We use this research to improve our services and learn more about diseases, treatments, and side effects.

Protecting your information

We’ll only use your information for GIFTR research. We don’t use or record any information that could identify you.

For example, we may record how many times a person has accessed mental health support services through their local public health facility.

We won’t record identifying information such as their name, date of birth or address.

Read more about how we manage health records and personal information.

If you’d like more information about the GIFTR program, you can email GIFTR@health.qld.gov.au.
