Queensland Health Innovation Precincts - Transcript

Queensland is positioning itself as one of the world's most connected and scalable health innovation ecosystems as it represents an Asia-Pacific gateway for global biotech and life science partnerships that public hospitals admit almost 1.6 million patients each year and deliver more than 2.3 million emergency services and 6.5 million outpatient services, providing outstanding real-world research and innovation scale.

Service delivery, research and digital infrastructure wrapped up in our integrated health ecosystem. Queensland has one of the best health services internationally, so we have a tremendous health base already. The government has really invested in the building of health precincts in and around some of our biggest hospitals in which has really led to enabling health innovation here in our state of Queensland.

The broader precincts will be able to come together to answer some of those larger challenges. And strategic questions. We've got these emerging centres of collaboration, emerging centres of capacity coming forward, and they're typically based on the site of hospitals. This place, was the genesis for, the Gardasil vaccine. We're trying to help to develop the treatment options for tomorrow.

Enabling academics to conduct their, research translate their research findings into, real world outcomes. We also, for example, take on clinical trials from global pharma and biotech. And enable them in their journey of drug development. Well, the Translational Science Hub is a partnership between the Queensland Government, Griffith University, the University of Queensland and Sanofi.

We do that by performing translational and early phase clinical trials. The research and innovation partnerships that we bring together. And then the commitment that we have towards the Queensland biomedical ecosystem, to advance research, to advance manufacturing, to advance product and development of vaccine trials. Those wanting general we want a first hospital, if not the first hospital in Australia to actually make CAR T-cell within our hospital environment.

We were the first in the world to detect a two millimetre cancer that was at the back of the throat that was a breakthrough. And that couldn't have happened if I didn't have our dedicated, clinical team working closely with us to deliver this high impact research. Townsville actually has pioneered quite a lot in the telehealth space, in the tele-chemo and onto tele-trials. It's actually an international methodology that's been taken up across the globe.

Herston precinct is really quite an exciting place to work. It has not only Australia's largest hospital, which is at the center of Australia's largest health service, but it also has some fantastic academic institutions present as well. A fantastic environment for integration of and sharing of information and capabilities into better research, which can improve outcomes for patients.

Here in northern Queensland. It's a very can-do place, for doing medical and health research. I'm very excited about the continued increase in clinical trials, activity using precision health in more aspects of how we deliver health. One of the biggest assets we have in Queensland is our, state-of-the-art electronic medical record (ieMR). It's a statewide system that will be able to capture information from the start, right to the end of the trial and beyond the lifetime of the trial, and when we take this as an asset and we're looking where the future will be, it will be digital, it will be intelligent.

This is an unbelievable platform for anything which comes in the future. And what that does for me as a clinician, it's enables me to get access to the latest technologies, often before anywhere else in the world receives them. Of course, a huge benefit is for our patients and the patients of Queensland. And in the Queensland Health hospitals, they're getting an early access to life changing and life saving treatments.

For one, I relish working in an environment where there's an increasing demand for new ideas, new ways of doing things, and new treatments. This, if you're looking for, having a clinical career that goes slightly beyond the immediate clinical delivery but involves the, development of the new therapies of tomorrow, these are the places where it should work. With significant and ongoing investment by the new Queensland Government in research and clinical care, and in making this a wonderful place to be, and visit.
