Occupational Therapy Palliative Care Framework

Occupational Therapy Framework of Clinical Practice for Palliative Care

Occupational Therapy is an integral component of palliative care. In 2015 a statewide palliative care OT working party collated a capability framework. This is to be used as a guide for Occupational Therapists working within Queensland Health and Mater Health Services in this specialist area of palliative care.

Clinical areas and domains of competence include:

  • Communication
  • Grief and Loss
  • Research and knowledge translation
  • Quality Improvement
  • Management and Leadership
  • Palliative Oedema Management
  • Care Planning and Collaborative Practice
  • Clinical Practice
  • Carer support

The framework is for practitioners and professional line managers. It assists in identifying workforce level requirements for service planning and development. It contributes to the delivery of specialist, appropriate, evidence based interventions by OTs.

The framework has been endorsed by Queensland Professional Leaders in OT and published on the Cancer OT interest group webpage. The framework has been reviewed and updated in 2017.

The framework can be accessed by Queensland Health staff via the COTI webpage under clinical resources:
