Role

The Queensland Nursing and Midwifery Executive Council represents and advocates for nurses and midwives across Queensland. We give strategic advice to ministers and Queensland Health on issues that affect our professions.

Objectives

Our priorities are to:

  • maintain the full scope of nursing and midwifery across Queensland
  • use data to improve nursing and midwifery services
  • build capacity and sustainability in the profession.

Our work includes:

  • giving advice to the Chief Nurse Officer, Chief Midwife Officer and ministers
  • raising awareness and advocating for staff on affecting our professions
  • leading strategies for innovation, patient safety and quality improvements
  • coordinating statewide initiatives to optimise nursing and midwifery services
  • building strong partnerships with stakeholders across the health service
  • being the official channel for feedback on improvements, policy and strategies
  • making sure staff are up to date with strategic priorities, latest initiatives and any policy changes, sharing relevant achievements, data and evidence.

Membership

The Co-chairs of the Council are the Chief Nurse Officer and the Chief Midwife Officer.

Members include executive level nursing and midwifery professionals from:

  • public hospital and health services
  • private and non-government sectors
  • universities.

Members are appointed by the Co-chairs, who can also invite other professionals to join when needed.

Meetings

We meet every second month. Some of our meetings include the:

  • Minister for Health and Ambulance Services
  • Minister for Women and Women's Economic Security
  • Director General of Queensland Health.

We accept submissions and presentations on nursing, midwifery and other health issues.
