Our office works towards advancing Queensland's midwifery services through expertise, advice, and support to deliver government health priorities.

Our Chief Midwife Officer is Liz Wilkes.

The Chief Midwife Officer provides advice and expertise on statewide midwifery services to support the best possible outcomes and experiences for women, babies, and families.

Responsibilities and functions

  • Providing strategic advice and support to deliver government health priorities
  • Developing policies and initiatives to support government health objectives
  • Reviewing maternity models of care and staff resourcing strategies for maternity services across Queensland
  • Building capacity and sustainability in midwifery
  • Promoting midwifery as a career

Our priorities include leading and advancing policies that:

  • support midwives to work to their full potential
  • build and maintain a sustainable workforce
  • drive innovation in midwifery.

The Queensland Birth Strategy 2024–2032 describes our commitment to improving birthing outcomes and access to midwifery care for all Queensland families.

Our Growing Deadly Families Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Maternity Services Strategy 2019-2025 sets out the vision that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies in Queensland are born healthy, into strong resilient families.

Professional governance

We develop, implement and evaluate professional governance in midwifery to support the highest standards of quality and safety.

This includes legislation, regulations, standards and policies governing midwifery in Queensland.
