Strength with Immersion (SwIM) Program

Our statewide Strength with Immersion Model (SwIM) Program helps early to mid-career midwives to develop skills in specialty areas and contexts using clinical immersion.

The program builds capability in the workforce and creates opportunities and pathways for career development. Queensland Health midwives can find out more on the staff intranet.

Nursing to midwifery scholarships

We give scholarships to registered nurses who want to become midwives. Students are funded to work towards an online Graduate Diploma of Midwifery with Charles Sturt University. The scholarship program is helping to address rural midwife shortages.

Read more about midwifery scholarships on the Charles Sturt University website.

Schools outreach

We regularly go to career expos throughout Queensland to help inspire the next generation of midwives. It gives students, teachers, parents and the public a chance to learn more about our profession. We highlight the varied roles and locations where people can work.

Growing Deadly Families

Our Growing Deadly Families Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Maternity Services Strategy 2019-2025 focuses on building a culturally capable workforce. That means having more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across all disciplines of maternity care. To help increase and support our First Nations workforce, we offer First Nations maternity scholarships, cadetships and mentorship.

Graduate midwifery group practice continuity guide

We developed the graduate midwifery group practice continuity guide (PDF 1014 kB) to help hospital and health services support graduate midwives to work in midwifery.

Ratios in maternity services

We're setting midwife to patient ratios in some postnatal wards. Having specific ratios helps us make sure new mothers and babies get the care they need after birth.

Business Planning Framework (BPF) Maternity Services Addendum

The business planning framework (PDF 4273 kB) makes sure mothers and babies are given safe, high-quality care in public maternity services. That includes having enough staff and making sure those staff are well supported.
