Listeriosis

A single case of non-perinatal invasive Listeria monocytogenes infection was notified in the recent week. Source of infection is unknown.

Influenza (lab confirmed)

There were 971 influenza notifications last week, 22% higher than the previous week (797). In 2025 YTD, there have been 18,412 influenza notifications, 36% higher than the same period last year (13,583).

Invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease

There has been one case of Hib notified in the recent week with onset in the previous reporting period.

Tuberculosis

A single case of rifampicin resistant tuberculosis in an overseas born person was notified in the recent week.

Malaria

A single locally acquired malaria case in a Torres Strait LGA resident was notified in the recent week. Case is still under investigation. Plasmodium species identification is pending. A public health response is underway.

Mpox

A single mpox case was notified in the recent week, likely acquired the infection in overseas.

Dengue

One new locally acquired case of dengue virus type 2 was notified in a Cairns and Hinterland HHS resident in a previous reporting week.

Influenza (lab confirmed)

In the reporting week, 782 influenza notifications were reported. In 2025 YTD, there have been 17,426 influenza notifications, 36% higher than the same period last year (12,806).

Melioidosis

There have been two notifications since the previous report. In recent weeks, notifications have decreased to similar levels as those observed in the previous five years.

Syphilis in pregnancy

One case of syphilis in pregnancy was reported in the previous week. There have been a total of 21 cases of syphilis in pregnancy recorded in 2025 year to date.

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC)

A single case of STEC infection was notified in the recent week (onset in a previous reporting period). Source of infection is unknown.

Syphilis in pregnancy

Four cases of syphilis in pregnancy were reported since the previous report. There have been a total of 20 cases of syphilis in pregnancy recorded in 2025 year to date.

Hepatitis A

Two cases of hepatitis A infection were notified since the previous report. One case had recently travelled from India. The second case reported no recent overseas travel. A source of infection is unknown.

Melioidosis

We continue to observe relatively low numbers of new melioidosis cases, similar to the weekly rate in previous years. Seven new cases were notified in the recent week.

Lyssavirus (ABLV/rabies)

The lyssavirus notification appearing in the tables has been invalidated and will be removed from future reports. This event was a routine follow-up of a person to receive post-exposure prophylaxis, after potentially being exposed to the rabies virus when scratched by an animal overseas.

Influenza (lab confirmed)

In the reporting week, there were 883 influenza notifications. In 2025 YTD, there have been 16,624 influenza notifications, 37% higher than the same period last year (12,138). There were 162 notifications among school-aged children (5 to 17 years) in the reporting week, reflecting a 22% increase compared to the previous week (133 notifications).

Typhoid

A single case of overseas acquired typhoid fever was notified in the recent week (onset in the previous reporting period). The case had recently travelled from India.

Melioidosis

Melioidosis notifications continue to decrease, with one notification in the recent week.

Influenza (lab confirmed)

In the reporting week, 816 influenza notifications were reported. In 2025 YTD, there have been 15,666 influenza notifications, 36% higher than the same period last year (11,487).
