The Australian Sign Language Cognitive Screening Test (Auslan-CST)

The Australian Sign Language Cognitive Screening Tool (Auslan-CST) aims to detect cognitive impairment and decline in older deaf Australians.

The Auslan-CST is a cultural adaption of the British Sign Language Cognitive Screening Test (BSL-CST).

It is fully translated into Auslan, presented in video format, and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.

The test examines the domains of orientation, attention, memory, fluency, language, visuospatial/perceptual abilities, and executive function.

The Auslan-CST is designed for deaf Auslan signing older adults (>50 years of age).

Administering the Auslan-CST

The test should be completed by a qualified medical or allied health professional. If the medical or allied health professional is not fluent in Auslan, they should work with a certified Auslan interpreter, preferably with experience in mental health.
