This program allows you to complete a short placement in another Queensland Health facility, in order to assist with service development and/clinical skills development. Alternatively, you can elect to host a visiting 'expert clinician' in your own workplace.
AHPEP is open to allied health professionals and allied health assistants working in regional, rural and remote locations within Queensland Health's Hospital and Health Services.
Participants must be employed in a regional, rural or remote location within Queensland Health's Hospital and Health Services.
An application round is conducted every six months. To apply, you must submit a written proposal including desired learning goals and expected outcomes of the placement for consideration. Placements are awarded based on the anticipated benefit of placements to you and your work unit, and the total funding available for each application round.
Further details regarding admission requirements are available in the application package.
The duration of a placement is generally between two and five consecutive days. In some circumstances, longer placements may be awarded. You need to allow time for travel to and from the host site as well as the time for the placement itself. In addition, you will need to assist with organisation of your placement (e.g. discussing and refining learning goals with placement facilitators, provision of information for travel bookings). After completion of your placement, you will be required to complete two short evaluation questionnaires, and must be prepared to share information/skills learned with your local work colleagues.
This program is open to Queensland Health employees only. The AHPEP program provides funding for travel from your usual work location to the placement town/city, accommodation near the placement location, and an incentive payment for host sites.
You will be required to meet the costs of local transport/parking, meals and incidental expenses during your placement. Costs of backfilling you while you are on placement (where required) must be met by your work unit.

Placements can be a valuable way to develop skills and knowledge which can subsequently be applied to assist with service development and clinical service delivery. The majority of previous placement participants have indicated that they have made improvement/changes to their practice as a result of completing a placement.
Participation in this professional development activity may contribute to continuing professional development (CPD) requirements for the purposes of registration and/or professional association membership. Please refer to the specific CPD requirements of your registration board and/or professional association to confirm.

I did my placement at the Royal Brisbane Hospital with rehabilitation physiotherapists. It was a great opportunity to ask many questions, improve my skills in this area, gain ideas for treatments and see how a bigger hospital operates. I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and still use the resources gained from this in my daily role. I was thoroughly impressed with the time therapists took out for me, offering further help if necessary when returning back to my base hospital and offering resources. I would definitely recommend AHPEP especially if you have a particular area of interest and wish to develop upon this and found it a very supportive and knowledge gaining experience.
