Cunningham Centre

Important update regarding the Cunningham Centre and future delivery arrangements

Since its establishment in 1989 as a Rural Health Training Unit, the Cunningham Centre has played an important role in supporting workforce development across Queensland, particularly in rural and remote communities. Operating under the auspices of Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service, the Centre has delivered education and training opportunities for more than three decades.

As part of broader changes across Queensland Health, responsibility for these programs will transition to the Health Workforce Division (HWD), Department of Health from 2 October 2026.

Changes to registration and accreditation arrangements

The Cunningham Centre was previously authorised by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) to deliver nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Subject to ASQA approval, arrangements for nationally recognised training and other accredited programs alignment with an RTO will transition to the proposed Queensland Health Enterprise RTO (Enterprise RTO) within the Health Workforce Division.

The application to establish the Enterprise RTO is currently being assessed by ASQA. In the meantime, arrangements are in place to ensure continuity of education and training services and minimise disruption for students, educators and stakeholders.

These changes will not affect the delivery of current Cunningham Centre programs or the support provided to students and stakeholders. Existing education and training activities will continue as planned throughout the transition period, and participants will be kept informed of any changes that may affect them.

The establishment of the Enterprise RTO will support a more coordinated Queensland Health approach to workforce capability, education, training and vocational learning across the state.

Queensland Health remains committed to delivering high-quality education and training that meets the needs of our workforce, health services and communities across Queensland.
