Healthy Weight Week is food for thought
Thinking small can lead to big results.
That’s the message from Queensland Health’s Preventive Health Unit as Healthy Weight Week (16-22 February) gets underway.
Director of the Preventive Health Unit, Kaye Pulsford said maintaining a healthy weight could be as simple as making a few small lifestyle changes around diet and exercise.
"Fad diets are unsustainable and often lacking in key nutrients," Ms Pulsford said.
"It’s far better to make small, simple changes every day. Over time, these will become regular healthy habits which could have a huge impact into the future.
"For example, you could aim to add fruit and vegetables to your meals, have smaller portion sizes, cut back on sugary drinks and alcohol, and sit less and move more."
The aim of the 2015 Healthy Weight Week campaign is to encourage more Australians to cook at home as a way to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
"Having a weekly food plan with smart food choices will help to keep you and your family healthier and happier, as well as saving you money and time," Ms Pulsford said.
"Planning for the week and making a shopping list helps to avoid food wastage and purchasing unhealthy products.
"Stocking the freezer with nutritious foods is a great way of ensuring you can prepare healthy dinners fast."
