Medication advice following TC Marcia

Pharmacists in areas affected by TC Marcia now have emergency arrangements in place for supplying patients with essential medicines.

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said the arrangements would ensure patients had ready access until at least 20 March 2015 to medications approved under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

"Under the three day emergency rule, a patient can receive a three day supply of medication without a prescription," Dr Young said.

"If patients have lost medication due to the effects of TC Marcia, pharmacists can provide them with a subsequent supply.

"Pharmacists can confirm the patient’s current medication details with the prescriber, or the prescriber can direct a pharmacist to supply medicine to a patient in an emergency situation."

The federal Department of Health is monitoring PBS supply arrangements in areas affected by TC Marcia to ensure that patient access to essential medicines can continue during this emergency.
