Small hospitals score highly with patients

Patients at Queensland's smallest hospitals are recording high satisfaction rates on the care they receive, according to the newly released Small Hospitals Patient Experience Survey 2014.

Chief Operations Officer, Dr Michael Cleary said the survey – which changes its area of focus annually – provided valuable insights into patient experiences in small hospitals and multi-purpose health centres.

"In late 2014, a total of 9347 interviews were conducted with patients who presented to 83 small, predominantly rural and remote facilities throughout Queensland," Dr Cleary said.

"Statewide results show that 97 per cent of surveyed patients were satisfied with the care they received.

"This is a good sign that our hospitals are largely meeting our communities' needs and expectations.

"The feedback will enable us maintain and improve our standards of service, with results helping to shape our future performance."

The survey asked patients about their interaction with doctors and nurses, their care and treatment, medication, quality of information provided, the overall hospital environment and facilities, as well as the discharge arrangements when leaving the hospital.

Dr Cleary said the high overall survey approval rates for Queensland's small hospitals and multi-purpose health centres were a credit to the health service.

"I'd like to thank all our staff because, without their dedication and commitment, we wouldn't be able to deliver the standard of services that we do," he said.

Hospital and Health Services have received individual facility reports and are reviewing their results to identify areas for improvement.
