What began as a revolutionary concept has become a major success story for Queensland Health, with the Open Hospitals website eclipsing one million visits last month.
Launched in February 2025, Open Hospitals allows Queenslanders to check waiting times and performance of the state’s major emergency departments and satellite health centres.
The data is updated every 15 to 30 minutes, ensuring people have access to current and reliable information.

Seen as an innovative idea during its inception, the website’s visits demonstrate that Queenslanders are clearly interested in proactively accessing up-to-date data about their local health facilities.
Following Open Hospitals’ early success, Queenslanders were given access to the performance of eight additional emergency departments and health clinics following a significant expansion of the website in December last year.
The inclusion of six emergency departments and two Minor Injury and Illness Clinics (MIICs) boosts the visibility of real-time activity across the state’s healthcare facilities, giving patients in rural and regional Queensland clearer information about wait times so they can make informed choices about where to seek care.
The Open Hospitals site has attracted more than 1,079,050 visits from over 259,280 individual users since its launch.

The Open Hospitals website also provides information about when to go to an emergency department, contact information for 13 HEALTH, and a link to the healthdirect online symptom checker.
