Molecular Epidemiology

Our Public Health Microbiology laboratory has extensive expertise in the generation of whole genome sequencing (WGS) data for viruses (in collaboration with Public Health Virology) and bacteria from isolates and direct from clinical specimens.

The molecular epidemiology team routinely applies WGS to disease surveillance, disease outbreaks and research projects.

Molecular-based typing performed in our laboratory generates important information on emerging diseases, circulating strains, transmission sources and the success of disease interventions such as vaccination and public health programs. This type of analysis also forms the basis of many grant-funded research projects, publications and collaborations.

Commercial WGS sequencing

We offer a commercial WGS service (including DNA extraction, Illumina Nextera XT library preparation, Illumina Next Seq 500 sequencing and bioinformatics analysis) to clients, contact us to discuss.

Accreditation

The laboratory has NATA accreditation for:

  • massive parallel sequencing
  • bioinformatics analysis (STEC, Shigella, C. diphtheriae, N. meningitidis, S. pyogenes).

Collaborations

The Public Health Microbiology laboratory has an interest in performing deep sequencing directly on clinical samples to generate epidemiological data and is interested in collaborations in this field.
