The Public and Environmental Health team play a critical role in the government's response to public health epidemics and threats.

We provide quality analytical services using the latest technology and undertake surveillance and reporting on a number of diseases and organisms that are of public health importance.

  • Microbiological testing

    Our public health microbiology laboratory provides expert scientific knowledge and investigation for notifiable bacterial pathogens and bacterial or toxin-mediated outbreaks.

  • Virological testing

    Our laboratory provides state-wide specialist diagnostic services and surveillance for viruses and mosquito- and tick-borne pathogens of medical importance including measles, gastroenteritis, dengue and Zika viruses.

  • Microbiology reference laboratories

    Our microbiology reference laboratories provide a tertiary referral service for notifiable bacterial pathogens at local, national and international levels.

  • Molecular Epidemiology

    Our Public Health Microbiology laboratory has extensive expertise in the generation of whole genome sequencing (WGS) data for bacteria both from isolates and direct from clinical specimens.

  • Q-PHIRE Genomics

    Information about the state-wide reference centre for microbial and public health genomics. It provides cutting edge, rapid microbial genomics to support the Queensland response to health threats, including viruses and the COVID-19 pandemic.
