Summary: Falls Injury Prevention in Queensland

A clinician-led Falls Injury Prevention Collaborative (FIPC) was established in 2006 to progress falls injury prevention in Queensland and to assist Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) to implement the Australian Council for Safety and Quality in Health Care 2005 National Guidelines for “Preventing falls and harm from falls in older people.”   Membership of the Falls Injury Prevention Collaborative was open to those with a role or primary interest in falls prevention among older people.

Since 2006 the FIPC was instrumental in transforming falls prevention in Queensland by implementing several programs

The FIPC members have contributed to falls prevention evidence through multiple publications and conference presentations over the past 10 years.

In 2012, the Australian Commission on Quality and Safety in Health Care released the National Standards. The FIPC was instrumental in supporting HHS’s  meet National Standard 10 Preventing Falls and Harm from Falls by providing evidence based tools to assess and manage falls in the in-patient, residential aged care  and community settings, including a post fall clinical pathway.

In 2016 the Falls Injury Prevention Collaborative was replaced by the Chairs of Falls Working group, and has since been re-named to the National Standard Falls Prevention Reference Group. This group provides advice and guidance to the Department of Health and HHS’s on falls prevention in relation to the Comprehensive Care Standard, 2nd Edition of the National Standards.
