Allied health workforce initiatives and innovations

Optimising the scope of practice for allied health professionals in the Queensland public health sector will contribute to the delivery of better outcomes for patients, the community and the workforce. This is consistent with the Blueprint for better healthcare in Queensland released by the Queensland Government in 2013.

The Ministerial Taskforce on Health Practitioner Expanded Scope of Practice report was launched by the Hon Lawrence Springborg MP, Minister for Health, on 4 June 2014. The taskforce explored expanded scope of practice (including full scope, extended scope and delegation) to optimise the flexibility and productivity of allied health professionals within the public health system.

The Department of Health supported the Health Practitioner Models of Care project between 2008 and 2013. These workforce redesign and reform projects were designed to promote sustainable clinical services and align service provision with Queensland Health and national strategic directions. Outcomes from projects completed between 2008 and June 2011 are available in Innovations in Models of care for the Health Practitioner Workforce in Queensland Health. Outcomes from the second round of projects, completed between July 2011 and 2013, are available in Innovations in models of care for the health practitioner workforce in Queensland Health 2011-2014.  Some examples are provided in our Snapshots of Success.

A variety of Tools and Education and Publications and Resources have also been released to provide guidance and assistance in the redesign of allied health service delivery.
