Requirements
The parameters of the additional activities that can be provided under the Queensland Community Pharmacy Chronic Conditions Management Pilot are set out in the Extended Practice Authority - Pharmacists - Community pharmacy chronic conditions management pilot, available on the legislation, standards and extended practice authorities page.
Pharmacists and pharmacy owners must meet defined participation requirements, and be authorised by Queensland Health, before they can deliver pilot services. These requirements are detailed in the Participation requirements (PDF 165 kB) and in the Queensland Community Pharmacy Chronic Conditions Management Pilot Handbook (PDF 596 kB).
Training requirements
Pharmacists are required to successfully complete additional education and training through an accredited education provider to participate in the Chronic Conditions Management Pilot. This involves completing 2 training components:
- Prescribing training
- Clinical practice training
Prescribing training
This component covers the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the National Prescribing Service (NPS) Medicinewise Prescribing Competencies Framework. The approved training course options are listed below:
- Queensland University of Technology—Safe prescribing and quality use of medicines course
- James Cook University—Extended community practice pharmacists course (subject PC6300)
- Pharmaceutical Society of Australia—Pharmacist Prescribing Scope of Practice Training Program
Clinical practice training
This component covers the clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of the conditions included within the scope of the Pilot. The approved training course options are listed below:
- James Cook University—Extended community practice pharmacists course (subjects PC6100 and PC6200)
- Pharmaceutical Society of Australia—Pharmacist Prescribing Scope of Practice Training Program
These lists will be updated as additional education providers become available.
Training Subsidy
The Queensland Government has committed $6 million to support pharmacists undertaking training to provide expanded scope community pharmacist prescribing services.
The funding is being administered on behalf of the Queensland Government by the Australasian College of Pharmacy, as a training subsidy to pharmacists completing endorsed training programs. To apply for the subsidy or for further information including eligibility criteria, please refer to the Australian College of Pharmacy.
Consultation room requirements
Pilot services must be delivered in a private consultation room for patient privacy and to ensure confidential conversations and patient examinations can be conducted.
The Quality Care Pharmacy Program (QCPP) outlines a number of minimum standards for a consultation area. These requirements include that the consultation area:
- allows for confidential sit-down consultations between the pharmacist and patient and/or substitute decision maker
- allows the pharmacist and patient and/or substitute decision maker to talk at normal speaking volumes without being overheard by others
- is not within the dispensary.
In addition to the QCPP standards for a consultation area, room requirements to deliver Pilot services are detailed in the below table.
