Course outline
This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to perform radiography aligned to the:
- Radiation Health requirements for a rural and remote area radiography use licence, the trainee extended rural and remote area X-ray licence
- Department of Health's X-ray Operator Services Guideline (PDF 300 kB)
This course builds on skills developed in the X-ray Operator Introductory Course (or similar) and covers:
- radiation safety and legislation
- interpretation and evaluation of X-ray request forms
- performing routine diagnostic radiographs of extended scope regions including shoulder joints, hip joints, abdomen and cervical spine with remote supervision
- common mechanisms of injury relevant to extended scope examinations
- common radiology terminology, anatomy and pathology relevant to extended scope examinations
- how to review and evaluate radiographs of extended scope regions for clinical value and technical proficiency.

Outcomes
You will be awarded a Radiation Health Statement of Attainment and a Cunningham Centre Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of this course.
Once the coursework has been successfully completed, you will be eligible to apply for an Extended rural and remote area X-ray licence issued by Radiation Health. This licence scope covers radiography of the chest, extremities, cervical spine, shoulder joints, hip joints and abdomen. Further details are included in the course process.
Admission criteria
To be eligible for this course you must:
- work in a rural or remote health facility with an existing x-ray operator (XO) service, or work as a clinician in the Prison Health Service with an XO service
- have completed the X-ray Operator Introductory Course (or equivalent) and hold a current chest and extremities X-ray licence (with 6+ months experience meeting all performance benchmarks and have passed the relevant competency assessment)
- be up to date with relevant mandatory training
- be able to demonstrate the need for extended licence at your facility and have support to undertake the course from a local Radiographer and Facility Manager.

At the end of each application round, applications are assessed by our team and offers are emailed out with a commencement date if successful (within 3 weeks of applications closing).
Prior to the closing date, applicants will need to review the course process and course disclaimer, complete and submit the required documentation into the online application portal. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
