Emergency response

The Radiation and Nuclear Science laboratory provides radioanalytical and post-incident remediation services as part of the Queensland Government and Queensland Health emergency response capability.

We provide reliable and timely analysis of environmental samples in the event of an accidental or intentional release of radioactivity.

The laboratory is a member of the Australian Radiation Laboratory Network (ARLN) consisting of state and federal government radioanalytical laboratories across Australia. We are also one of 160 laboratories in the world that are members of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) ALMERA network (Analytical Laboratories for the Measurement of Environmental Radioactivity.

We actively participate in the ARLN and ALMERA networks to:

  • demonstrate our technical competence through participation in proficiency tests
  • apply recommended and validated methods to ensure national and world-wide comparability of results
  • share information on capabilities and expertise facilitating identification of laboratories with competence for emergent situations.
