Falls prevention

Helping older Queenslanders stay healthy, active, independent and on their feet.

This section is for seniors and anyone who works with seniors, including individuals, organisations, health professionals in hospitals and the community, aged care facilities, local councils, government departments, and the fitness industry.

What is a fall?

The World Health Organisation defines a fall as inadvertently coming to rest on the ground, floor or lower level, excluding intentional change in position to rest in furniture, wall or other objects.

Falls in older people cover a wide range of events, including:

  • trips on raised obstacles (e.g. loose rugs, cords, mats) or uneven surfaces (e.g. footpaths, roads)
  • slipping on wet or highly polished surfaces
  • tumbles and stumbles down steps or stairs
  • falling off a ladder or stepladder
  • falling over in a shopping centre or while using public transport.

Noting that falls are not accidents.

Similarly, falls are not an inevitable or unavoidable part of life. You can lower your risk of falls by improving safety in and around your home and managing your health.

Preventing falls for seniors

Falls can be prevented. Some risk factors for falls are easy to manage and, when falls occur, the severity of injuries can be reduced. Taking safety measures around your home, or in hospital, and looking after your health and physical wellbeing can make a big difference.

Things to think about to stay on your feet:

  • your health conditions
  • your medicines
  • your feet and shoes
  • your vision and eyesight
  • strong bones, muscles and healthy eating
  • continence/toileting.

If you feel like you might need support with exploring the above list, or if you feel unsteady or have had a fall, even one that does not cause an injury, please make an appointment with your doctor.
