skinTALK is a culturally grounded, curriculum-aligned healthy skin education package for Years 3–4 students in Queensland primary schools.
Delivered by Aboriginal Australian comedian, dancer and actor Sean Choolburra, skinTALK uses storytelling, movement, creativity and fun to help students understand how healthy skin supports healthy bodies and strong communities.
Developed with communities, for communities
skinTALK was co-created with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, educators, health professionals and community representatives from Townsville and Palm Island (Bwgcolman).
While developed through North Queensland partnerships, the package is designed for use across Queensland, with flexibility to reflect local cultures, languages and community contexts.
Aligned with the Australian Curriculum
The four-module program aligns with Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education, Years 3–4, with connections to other learning areas.
Teachers can deliver the complete program or select individual modules and activities to suit their students and classroom.
Four flexible learning modules
Each skinTALK module includes a 4–6 minute video featuring Sean Choolburra, a ready-to-use lesson plan and practical classroom activities.
- Module 1 – Hello Skin: Meet your living shield and learn how skin protects us.
- Module 2 – skinTALK and Germ Hunting: Learn about germs, skin infections, skin checking and getting help early.
- Module 3 – Healthy Skin, Healthy Heart: Discover the connection between healthy skin, Strep A and healthy hearts.
- Module 4 – Strong Me, Strong Mob: Bring it all together through healthy choices, family, community and looking after each other.
Supporting healthy skin and healthy hearts
skinTALK helps students learn about healthy skin, prevention and early help-seeking in a safe, engaging and culturally responsive way.
The package supports broader efforts to prevent skin infections that can contribute to serious conditions such as acute rheumatic fever (ARF), rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN).
