So the community's come together, just bringing awareness and starting that conversation. Being healthy enables us to keep going, keep the fire burning, stay healthy, be healthy, live healthy, live longer. It's all about Let's End RHD Together.

So rheumatic heart disease is when valves in the heart are damaged through rheumatic fever. It could start with a sore, it could be a family member getting scabies, and then it can turn into further long-term complications. With RHD, we are going out to engage communities and doing artwork, helping our community to work together. Art is like a good conversation starter and yeah, community gets around it.

Community are able to participate. They've got their own designs going up on that walk and that's where they can progress to meaningful, deeper discussions. It's important that our community take ownership, keeping our families healthy and taking pride in that.

Be proud of who you are. Start to lead a healthy life. It's all prevention, prevention, prevention. Really prevent. Make sure you brush your teeth, you know, clean hygiene. Make sure you have clean skin and stuff like that. Healthy skin, healthy throat leads to a healthy heart, healthy skin, strong heart. We don't know if our heart is sick until it's too late. And the only way you can find out about that is go to your doctor regularly and get checked out.

We welcome you all. Any questions, just stretch your hand and the help is there. If you've got any skin sores or achy throat, come see the doctor straight away.

Engaging Community with Local Artists and Partnerships

Let's be Proud and Deadly – Healthy Skin Strong Heart

A deadly suite of localised clinical and community resources were co-designed by engaging two First Nation artists with cultural connections to Central Queensland: Aunty Kaylene Butler and Mitchell Blake in strong partnership with local communities, including:

  • Bidgerdii Community Health Services
  • Yoonthalla Services Woorabinda
  • Nhulundu Health Service
  • CQHHS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Wellbeing
  • schools.

A key aspect of Central Queensland’s community education and awareness on healthy skin and its connection to a healthy heart, were three events in Biloela, Woorabinda and Blackwater.

Over 260 community members, leaders, and Elders came together to create a living mural at each town’s hospital and health centre, featuring vibrant and culturally meaningful messages about healthy skin and strong hearts.

Children participated by washing dolls with soapy water, learning how to prevent and treat skin infections from mosquito bites, scabies and animal scratches.

Resources

Queensland Health localised resources were co-designed with Central Queensland’s First Nations community under the banner Let’s End RHD Together.

These resources can be used in a range of locations in the Central Queensland community, providing a starting point or a reminder of the RHD story. They can also provide a visual aid for health practitioners, educators and health clinics to help raise awareness and educate community members.
