Mortuary assistants
Our coronial mortuary assistants provide support to the pathologists and maintain mortuary facilities.
As a mortuary assistant at Coronial and Public Health Sciences (CPHS) you'll play an important role in the post-mortem examination process. You'll assist forensic pathologists in preparing bodies and organ specimens for examination, while also maintaining the mortuary rooms, supplies, and equipment.
This job is physically and emotionally demanding and involves exposure to deceased persons of all ages and conditions including trauma and decomposition.
Qualification requirements
You don't need a qualification to work as a mortuary assistant but we value relevant qualifications in science. We also value demonstrated autopsy, dissection and pathology laboratory experience.

What duties you'll undertake
Working at a coronial mortuary, you'll provide mortuary assistance to pathologists including:
- photography
- collection of specimens
- labelling and processing of specimens
- specialised dissection
- reconstruction
- handling of deceased persons, handling them with dignity, care and respect at all times.
You'll also undertake continual professional development, quality and workplace health and safety activities and follow mortuary registration practices accurately.
In addition, you'll:
- clean autopsy theatres and storage areas to ensure a clean working environment
- assist in the controlled release and preparation of deceased persons for viewing and identification purposes.
