Investigation into urology services at Townsville University Hospital
On 28 September 2025, Queensland Health commissioned an independent Health Service Investigation under Part 9 of the Hospital and Health Boards Act 2011 (QLD) into urology services at Townsville University Hospital.
The investigation was commissioned following concerns about delays and gaps between initial referral to diagnosis and treatment of urology patients, including diagnostic tests, between 1 January 2022 and 31 July 2025.
The investigation will examine and report on urology services at Townsville University Hospital between January 2022 and July 2025 and will cover administration, management, delivery and clinical governance of urology services.
The investigation will consider compliance with policies, procedures and standards, what actions were taken to address issues or concerns, the appropriateness of follow-up care and if improvements can be made across the health system.
A copy of the report is due to be handed to the Director-General of Queensland Health in mid 2026. An extension to the timeframe was granted to give the investigators sufficient time to complete their work and a further extension required to allow for natural justice processes.
