About Pathology Queensland

Pathology Queensland (formerly Queensland Health Pathology Service) is the main provider of public sector pathology services in Queensland. We provide clinical support, tertiary and state referral services, autopsies, education, research and development.

We have 33 pathology laboratories throughout the State. They range in size from large, highly sophisticated facilities at the Princess Alexandra and Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospitals, to small laboratories such as Dalby and Emerald.

Our laboratories are registered with the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) acting in collaboration with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, and accredited by the Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health.

Our team on the ground consist of highly qualified medical specialists in the fields of anatomical pathology, haematology, chemistry, microbiology, and immunology.

Our range of services include specimen collection, analytical testing, results interpretation, clinical consultation, teaching and research.

Our Major Laboratories

Pathology Queensland - Central

Our newest and biggest facility is located on the Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospitals campus. It provides tertiary specialist analysis in Molecular Genetics, Prenatal Diagnosis, Therapeutic and Illicit Drug testing and testing for inborn errors of metabolism. The Queensland Cytology Service is based at Pathology Queensland - Central.

The Queensland Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory based at Pathology Queensland - Central provides diagnostic and reference services in mycobacterial diseases (tuberculosis, atypical mycobacteriosis, Hansens Disease) to public and private pathology laboratories across Australia and the south Pacific. Also located at Pathology Queensland - Central is the Queensland and South Pacific reference laboratory for serological and molecular class I and class II HLA tissue typing for transplant patients and donors. Accreditation by the American Society for Histocompatability and Immunogenetics is held.

Princess Alexandra Hospital

The Princess Alexandra Hospital laboratory is licenced by the Therapeutic Goods Administration to provide microbiology services to Queensland's Tissue banks.

The laboratory is an Australian reference centre for molecular diagnosis of haematologic malignancies.

The Prince Charles Hospital

The Haemostasis Research Laboratory also based at The Prince Charles Hospital has completed five large single-centre studies in the area of cardiopulmonary bypass surgery over the last 10 years. This work has been internationally published and resulted in procedural improvements and increased efficiencies in clinical practice.

Townsville Hospital

Our laboratory based at Townsville Hospital offers an Indirect Haemagglutination assay (IHA) and Enzyme immunoassays (EIA) for IgG and IgM raised against Burkholderia pseudomallei. It holds a significant culture collection ofBurkholderia pseudomallei isolates and provides a service for the confirmation of isolates submitted from other laboratories for identification and susceptibility testing. The laboratory currently collaborates with a number of institutions on a variety of aspects relating to the causative agent of this condition inlcuding molecular typing, animal models of disease and therapy, environmental testing and the immune response to disease.
