Acquired Brain Injury Outreach Service

The Acquired Brain Injury Outreach Service (ABIOS) is a specialist community-based rehabilitation service. ABIOS was established in June 1997 to enhance the service system to people with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). ABIOS is located in the Princess Alexandra Hospital Health Service District and is funded by Queensland Health.

ABIOS Mission

ABIOS Mission is to assist people with ABI in Queensland, their families and carers to achieve an improved quality of life and community integration through increased independence, choice, opportunity and access to appropriate and responsive services.

ABIOS aims to achieve its mission through three integrated strategies:

1. Maximising Community Integration for people with acquired brain injuries. ABIOS has adopted a community based, case management service delivery process.

For each client, ABIOS Rehabilitation Co-Ordinators provide:

This multi-faceted approach facilitates a sustainable service and social context around a person with an ABI that allows greater community integration.

2. Providing Training and Consultancy. ABIOS initiates and provides formal and informal training and advice to service providers, carers and family members and people with acquired brain injuries. These direct and indirect services foster the development of strategically informed and aligned services to people with acquired brain injuries.

3. Conducting Research and Development projects. ABIOS has developed a community oriented research and development agenda which, in the long term, will result in improved outcomes for people with ABI and their families through enhanced community integration. Flow-on effects of ABIOS's community oriented research will be more responsive service delivery approaches.
