A statement of recognition

Queensland Health and the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC), the peak body representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health organisations in Queensland, acknowledge the Traditional and Cultural Custodians of the lands, waters and seas across Queensland. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise the role of current and emerging leaders in shaping a better health system.

We recognise that the First Nations peoples of Queensland are both Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We acknowledge and support the cultural knowledge, determination and enduring commitment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, who have cared for the health and wellbeing of First Nations peoples for millennia.

Terms used

Throughout this report, the terms ‘First Nations peoples’ and ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ are used interchangeably in place of ‘Indigenous’. In acknowledgement of the right to self-determination, Queensland Health and QAIHC respect the right of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to define their own cultural identities. This may include using these or other terms, including the names of specific sovereign peoples.
