To achieve health equity we need change

  • In 2024, the estimated resident population of First Nations peoples in Queensland was 292,735 or 5.2% of the total Queensland population. Between 2021 and 2031, the First Nations population is projected to grow by approximately 68,500 people; an increase of 25%.
  • The First Nations population in Queensland is also more decentralised than the rest of the population. In 2023, 57% of First Nations peoples lived outside of the hospital and health services (HHSs) located in South East Queensland, compared with 28% of other Queenslanders.
  • First Nations peoples are younger on average than other Queenslanders. In 2024, 53% were aged under 25,compared with 30% of other Queenslanders, and only 6% were aged over 65, compared with 18% of other Queenslanders.
