Persons with a limb difference accessing funding through the Queensland Artificial Limb Service (QALS) will benefit from increased subsidies under the 2023-24 State Budget.

QALS, part of the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS), has received a temporary funding increase for four (4) years, from July 2023 to June 2027. The funding boost will increase subsidies for upper and lower artificial limb components, including waterproof components, where deemed appropriate by the applicant’s prosthetist.

QALS clients are eligible to apply for funding for a definitive prosthesis (also known as an artificial limb) every three years.

Temporary funding increases from July 2023 to June 2027 are noted in the below tables.

Waterproof components and socket:

Where waterproof components are included on a QALS funded prosthesis, and intended to be used in a wet environment, such as a bathroom or garden, it is important that the client has been instructed by their PSP on:

  • Where the prosthetic can be used safely.
  • The risks of using their prosthesis in a wet environment.
  • How to clean and care for their prosthesis after use in wet areas.
  • Any other information relevant to safe use in wet conditions.

Replacements/Repairs that are NOT funded by QALS – refer to Guidelines for Queensland Artificial Limb Service for full list:

Replacements/repairs for QALS funded prostheses or components that are:

  • Damaged due to corrosion, negligence or misuse.
  • That have been replaced or are ‘expired’.
  • Where there is an error by the prosthetist e.g. limb design.
  • Where the prosthesis has been used in a manner contrary to the intended use.
